About the museum
The Salaspils memoriāls (Salaspils Memorial) is located on the site where the Salaspils nometne (Salaspils camp), created by the occupation regime of National Socialist Germany, existed from 1941 to 1944. The memorial ensemble covers 25 hectares and was opened on 31 October 1967. Its authors are architects and sculptors, and today the ensemble is included in the Latvian cultural canon and on the state list of protected cultural monuments as a monument of art and architecture.
The exhibition was created in 2017 and has been open to visitors since 7 February 2018. It introduces the latest research on the history of the Salaspils camp and the making of the memorial itself, from the competition idea to its opening in 1967. Parts of the exhibition are in the main building of the memorial – the entrance gallery – and in several objects on the grounds, including a stand by the car park and the environmental object “Panorāma” (Panorama) on the “Nāves ceļš” (Road of Death).
Since 2018 the memorial has been a branch of the Daugavas muzejs (Daugava Museum). The open area is accessible at any time of day.
