About the museum

The museum is in the schoolhouse built in the oldest timber-log construction in Latvia (state-protected historical monument No. 95). The school was located here from 1843 to 1964, and the museum opened on 13 May 1972 on the initiative of the writer Herberts Dorbe. The exhibition tells of the events and personalities active in the Dundaga area over almost two centuries of history, up to the late 20th century.

Visitors can see the school building, built in 1842, with its fire house, a 19th-century classroom and the teacher’s living room, as well as the ethnographic farmstead, and experience a lesson in a rural school. The school’s first teacher, Ernests Dinsbergs (1816–1902) – one of the first Latvian cultural workers, a writer, poet, publicist and translator – worked at Kubalu school for fifty years and lived here until 1899.
