About the museum
The Mazsalacas muzejs is an accredited municipal museum housed in the former Valtenbergu muiža (Valtenbergi manor building) on Parka iela. The permanent exhibition is built from donations made to the museum by descendants of the region's historic families: the collection of more than 500 bells of Ēriks Štamps, the collection of 1,300 toy mice sent from Canada by Ilga Andersone, the hunting trophies of Arnis Šteinbergs, and pre-war bicycles from the Ģ. Erenpreisa factory.
The most outstanding exhibit is the collection of wooden sculptures by the woodcarver Valters Hirte – characteristic little devils and figures endowed with virtues and vices, drawn from fairy tales and place names, as well as portraits of well-known artists. Descendants from the Mazsalaca area search for their ancestors in the museum on the exhibited family tree posters. An exhibition on the 1949 deportations and examples of folk costumes typical of Mazsalaca and North Vidzeme are also on display.
The museum organises thematic exhibitions and lectures on history.
