About the museum

The Pāles novadpētniecības muzejs has been housed in the old Kalnakrogs building since 1995. The tavern had already been a centre of local life in the past, especially in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, when a market was held there; later it became the Lauksaimniecības biedrības nams (House of the Agricultural Society). In the kolkhoz period the building was renovated and partly rebuilt, and in 1978 a cultural house was added to it.

Despite its name, the museum’s exhibitions tell about a wider area than the parish alone. Together with local residents, the museum surveys the cultural and historical values of Pāle parish and of the areas connected with the descendants of the Vidzeme Livonians. It is the only museum in Latvia where one can learn about the history of the Vidzeme Livonians.
