About the museum
The Naukšēnu Cilvēkmuzejs (Naukšēni People's Museum) is located in the building “Doktorāts” (Doctor's House) in Naukšēni, Valmiera municipality. The museum tells of the historical events of North Vidzeme and especially of the area around Naukšēni, recounting them through the experiences and fates of local people.
The exhibition is unusual in that it is not hidden behind glass in display cases. Visitors can try weaving on looms (stelles), put on an Estonian or Latvian folk costume, sign with an ink pen and dance the famous Naukšēni disco. In this way one can understand the connections between the fates of earlier generations and historical events, and look at the evidence of material and intangible history.
The museum offers educational programmes for children and adults of all ages, such as an orienteering game through the museum with disco steps, the lesson “Dienas, kad dzima Latvija” (The Days When Latvia Was Born) and, in December, a programme with rūķi (elves). In addition, excursions to the Naukšēni manor and along Naukšēni's main street can be booked, and tourist information is available.
