About the museum
The museum preserves the cultural and historical heritage of the Augšdaugava district and the life stories of the inhabitants of the Daugava valley. It is located in the protected landscape area “Augšdaugava”.
The museum's reputation rests on the collection of works by the sculptor Valentīna Zeile, born in Naujene parish – the “Valentīnas Zeiles darbnīca” (Valentīna Zeile's Workshop), more than 6,000 works of art, mostly created from 1956 to 1982, before she left for Paris. A large Augšdaugava patchwork quilt (Lielais Augšdaugavas musturdeķis) was also created in the museum, with the participation of many inhabitants of Latvia and foreign guests.
The exhibitions and displays tell about history, art, ethnography and nature, about the cultural heritage of the Latgalian, Polish, Lithuanian and Slavic cultures, and about the traditional craft skills of the Daugava valley.
