About the museum

The museum was founded on 1 January 1985 and is an institution of the Preiļi municipal government. Its task is to strengthen the self-confidence of residents by introducing them to the local tangible and intangible heritage.

The collection holds more than 20,000 items on the history of the district, its economic, educational and cultural development, and notable personalities. The main holdings are the ceramics of Polikarps Čerņavskis, works by Preiļi ceramicists, fine art, textiles, ethnographic objects, photographs, documents, and Latgalian painting and graphic art.

The exhibitions are spread over three buildings in the town and can be visited as the “muzeju loks” (museum loop).
