About the museum
The Rīgas Motormuzejs opened in 1989 on the initiative of the Latvijas Antīko automobiļu klubs (Latvian Antique Car Club), and has been a state museum since 1992. The building in the Mežciems district was designed by the architect Viktors Valgums. The museum is a member of the Latvijas Muzeju biedrība (Latvian Museums Association) and is accredited as a museum by the Ministry of Culture.
In 2013 the museum closed for reconstruction, and the cars were temporarily moved to Rāmava. After an extensive renovation, the museum reopened on 2 July 2016 with a new, interactive exhibition.
The exhibition is spread over three floors covering more than 4,000 square metres. On the ground floor it presents the history of the automobile, early 20th-century cars and car manufacturing in Latvia; on the first floor, motor sport, historically significant cars, Soviet car manufacturing and limousines for Soviet leaders; and in the basement, lorries and vehicles of special purpose, such as fire engines and ambulances. The exhibition story is enriched with multimedia solutions and interactive activities. One of the best-known exhibits is a replica of the 1938 racing car Auto Union Type C/D.
