About the museum

Braki, in the Vidzeme Upland, is the place where the Latvian classic Rūdolfs Blaumanis (1863–1908), master of the short story and founder of modern drama, lived and worked creatively. The memorial museum was founded on 10 May 1959, and all the farmstead buildings have been restored as they were in the writer's lifetime.

The history of the museum is linked to several eras: in 1940 “Braki” became a branch of the State Literature Museum; in the battles of the Second World War in 1944 the buildings were damaged; in 1958 the farmstead was taken over by the Madonas novadpētniecības muzejs (Madona Local History Museum), and its restoration began. The residential house was the first to be restored, in 1959, and the granary and barn were restored later.

The Braki farmstead comprises a complex of eight buildings: a residential house, a granary, a barn with a threshing floor, a horse stable, a grain store, a cowshed, a bathhouse and a small-livestock shed. All the buildings are made of log beams with reed roofs; the residential house dates from 1811. From the farmstead nature trails lead to the Zibensšķeltais akmens (Lightning-Struck Stone), the sculpture “Edgars”, the Noliņa ābele (Noliņš's apple tree), Jāņkalniņš and the Pirtsgravas spring. The museum also organises literary events, open-air performances and the Blaumanis literary prize competition.
