About the museum
The museum was founded in 2011, and its home is the Mēru muiža (Mēri manor). The manor's main house was built in 1907 by Jēkabs Hekers in the neo-Renaissance style, inspired by late German Mannerism. The beauty of the manor is complemented by a park with one of the largest oaks in Latvia, whose crown is the largest in the Baltics – about 30 × 30 metres.
Since 2017 the museum has displayed an exhibition on the medical history of Smiltene municipality and the origins of the museum, which honours the contribution of the Krūmals family doctors to researching, collecting and preserving the cultural heritage of Smiltene. Various exhibitions are regularly held in the museum, and visitors can also learn about the history of the Birzuļi primary school.
