About the museum
The Turaidas muzejrezervāts (Turaida Museum Reserve) was established in 1988 on the basis of the Sigulda Local History Museum, which began work in 1948. Its aim is to preserve for future generations one of Latvia's oldest state formations – the historic centre of Turaida with its complex of cultural monuments. The museum reserve consists of monuments, the natural and cultural-historical environment, and a collection which is part of the Latvian National Museum Collection.
The museum reserve researches, preserves and maintains the buildings, monuments and cultural environment of the historic centre of Turaida over an area of 57.86 ha. More than 38 museum exhibitions are set up here, telling about events on the site in the context of Latvian and European history.
The museum reserve is open to visitors every day, without days off. In summer the exhibitions are open from 10:00 to 18:00, but the open-air exhibitions, the Galvenais tornis (main tower) of the castle and the tower-like south wing are also open outside these hours.
