About the museum
The Ziemeļkurzemes Amatniecības konsultāciju centrs (North Kurzeme Crafts Advisory Centre), also known as the Ventspils Amatu māja (Ventspils House of Crafts), opened its doors on 3 August 2007. It is located in the restored oldest school building of the Duchy of Courland, dating from the 18th century, which has become a cultural and tourist attraction. From 1849 to 1851, when a district school operated in the building, the young Latvian figure and folklorist Krišjānis Barons studied here.
Visitors can see a classroom furnished in the 19th-century style, and by prior registration can take part in a lesson according to 19th-century traditions. The building houses photo, weaving and pottery workshops, as well as a souvenir shop.
