About the museum
Adomas Petrauskas (1914–2004) opened the doors of his granary to the first visitors in 1969. The exhibition he prepared himself included ethnographic objects and archaeological finds. Seeing his enthusiasm for collecting antiquities, the leaders of the Antašava collective farm of the time helped the museum to grow. The self-taught village craftsman Jonas Laužikas built an original tower on the homestead; its base rests on huge unburied stones and resembles the wheel of an old cart.
In 1996 the museum founder donated his entire life's work to Kupiškis district municipality, and the Adomo Petrausko muziejus (Adomas Petrauskas Museum) in Uoginiai village became a branch of the Kupiškis Museum. The museum now consists of a complex of buildings: a residential house, two granaries, the tower and a farm-implement shed. The collection holds more than 7,000 exhibits.
The homestead is decorated with wood carvings by Adomas Petrauskas himself, with stones gathered in the fields over several decades and natural formations of the strangest shapes. In 2015 the Uoginių amatų centras (Uoginiai Crafts Centre) was built on the grounds; it coordinates traditional crafts, and holds lectures, exhibitions and educational sessions.
