About the museum
The Veronikos Šleivytės paveikslų galerija (Veronika Šleivytė Picture Gallery) in the village of Viktariškiai, by the Pyvesa stream, was established on 2 September 1985, while the artist was still alive. The painter was born on 6 December 1906 in the small town of Antašava, in the family of a blacksmith with many children; when she was four years old her father moved the house to Viktariškiai village. Although the family lived in poverty, she completed primary school and in 1934 graduated from the Kaunas Higher School of Art, qualifying as a graphic artist, though she preferred painting. While living in Kaunas she often returned to her homeland.
The gallery is set in the Šleivys family homestead and consists of the living house, a bathhouse-forge and six granaries. Personal belongings of the artist, pastels, graphic works and her photographs, which have recently attracted great attention, are displayed. The exhibition in the living house, the traditional cottage (gryčia), tells of the artist's childhood. The gallery holds exhibitions and projects, plein-air sessions of folk artists, educational sessions, community gatherings and tours. The gallery is a branch of the Kupiškis Museum.
