About the museum
The neo-Romantic Alanta manor dates from 1858. The owner of the manor, Tadeušas Pacas-Pomarnackis, came here in spring and left in autumn and cultivated his summer residence: he assembled valuable collections and bought luxurious chandeliers, furniture and porcelain. Life went on like this until the First World War. In independent Lithuania the palace became the property of the Minister of Communications, Balys Sližys; in Soviet times it housed a vocational school, a farm office and a shop, and people lived there. In 1972 part of the television film “Tadas Blinda” was shot here.
The large palace hall with a fireplace served as a ballroom and is now the most important room; photographs of the interior from the early 20th century show the manor’s former grandeur. In 2015 the Vaidotas Žukas Art Gallery opened in the manor, displaying a collection of 166 works – mineral paintings, collages, drawings and glazed reliefs. In 2018 an exhibition on Blessed Teofilius Matulionis was set up in two first-floor halls, with toys, postcards and book inserts made by him.
The ethnographic exhibition was left to the manor in 1968 by the librarian Elvyra Satkūnaitė, and old items are kept in the basement. Next to it is a collection of carvings by the wood-carver Jonas Matelionis and models of ethnographic and technical devices – some of the models can be turned, so that their operation can be understood. Works by well-known artists are regularly exhibited at the manor, and visitors can also climb the manor tower.
