About the museum
After the reconstruction that ended in mid-2021, the renovated Molėtai Regional Museum houses the Molėtai Art Gallery, the museum's exhibition hall and the new historical exhibition “Raktas į Molėtų krašto istoriją” under one roof. The permanent exhibition, opened in June 2026, uses information technology and theatre devices: history comes alive through objects, live storytelling, mini-performances, images and sound. The historical figures are played by actors from the Molėtai region and the youth theatre group “Remarka”.
The exhibition introduces the diversity of the region's landscape – eskers, lake basins, river valleys and raised bogs – as well as two early settlements in Luokesa (polinės gyvenvietės) about 2.5 thousand years old, Dubingiai Castle and the history of the Radvila family, including the life of Barbara Radvilaitė in Dubingiai. It also tells the story of the Giedraitis princes – Blessed Mykolas Giedraitis and Jerzy Giedroyc, founder of the journal Kultūra – of the Lithuanian state-builders Malvina and Matas Valeika, and of Antanas Jaroševičius.
Before the Second World War, Lithuanian, Yiddish, Polish and other languages were spoken in the Molėtai region, so the exhibition also covers the Holocaust, the post-war partisan movement, deportations and the Soviet period up to the changes brought by Sąjūdis.
