About the museum
The Balio ir Vandos Sruogų namai-muziejus (Balys and Vanda Sruoga House Museum) is housed in a wooden villa of modernist forms, designed in 1936 by the architect Vladimiras Zubovas. The house was first built in Samogitia (Žemaitija), on the estate of V. Sruogienė’s father, Kazimieras Daugirdas; it was later dismantled, brought to Kaunas by railway and reassembled. Construction was completed in 1938, and the Sruoga family moved in.
On the ground floor three authentic rooms have been restored. In Professor B. Sruoga’s study, part of his personal library, a typewriter and an antique writing desk have survived, and portraits of the writer by artists hang on the walls. In the study of the historian Dr Vanda Daugirdaitė-Sruogienė, part of the memorial library sent from the USA, personal objects and reproductions of M. K. Čiurlionis’s paintings are displayed. The living-dining room contains furniture made by the artist Jonas Prapuolenis, and the walls are decorated with works by well-known artists.
An additional exhibition, “The History of One Car”, is also presented, with an audio guide.
