About the museum
In 1924 the brothers Mikas and Kipras Petrauskas leased a plot of land on Žaliasis kalnas and began building a two-storey brick house to the design of engineer Aleksandras Golovinskis; it was completed in 1925. The bright building, decorated with tulip motifs, is an excellent example of architecture from the period of the First Republic. The opera soloist Kipras Petrauskas lived with his family on the second floor until 1948, while the composer Mikas Petrauskas settled on the ground floor.
In 1940 the Soviet authorities expropriated the house, but the family could still use two flats. In 1970, a year after K. Petrauskas's death, his memorial museum was set up here, but it opened to visitors only seven years later. After studies of the interior and exterior in 2006, the memorial flat was restored, and the authentic façade decoration, balconies and terrazzo staircase were restored. In 2023 the house, together with the Naujamiestis and Žaliakalnis areas, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The museum now houses the Elena and Kipras Petrauskas Memorial Flat, the exhibition “Valstybės teatras. Tautą burianti muzika” and the exhibition “Estrada. Svajonės kaina”. The building also has a chamber concert hall and an educational space, where concerts, book launches, educational sessions and theatrical tours take place.
