About the museum
The building of the Kaunas Picture Gallery (Kauno paveikslų galerija), designed by the architects Liucija Gedgaudienė and Jonas Navakas, opened in 1979. It was originally intended for the art collection that the collector Mykolas Žilinskas donated to Kaunas. It soon became clear that not all the works would fit there, so a larger building was planned, which later housed the Mykolo Žilinsko dailės galerija.
Today the gallery is a branch of the Nacionalinis M. K. Čiurlionio dailės muziejus. It exhibits Lithuanian and foreign art, hosts exhibitions, and also shows the exhibitions of the community platform “Backup stories”. The gallery runs educational programmes for visitors of all ages, from children to seniors.
The Jurgis Mačiūnas (George Maciunas) Fluxus space holds a special place. It displays works by Mačiūnas, Jonas Mekas, Joseph Beuys, Mieko Shiomi, Ben Vautier, George Brecht and other members of the movement: unconventional books, examples of mail art, prints and objects. Works by Lithuanian authors dedicated to the movement are also on show, as well as the installation “Juodoji skylė” (Black Hole) by Ay-O and the installation “Manomano teatras” by Takako Saito.
