About the museum
The Joniškio istorijos ir kultūros muziejus (Joniškis History and Culture Museum) was founded in 1989. Its founder is the Joniškio rajono savivaldybės taryba (Joniškis District Municipal Council). The museum keeps and displays archaeological, historical and ethnographic material on the history and culture of the Joniškis region, and promotes the works of artists and scholars from the region.
The collection consists of archaeology, household and ethnography, art, photography, print and numismatic collections. The exhibitions give much attention to the Semigallian tribe: restored finds are displayed, Semigallian costumes are recreated, and reconstructions of the weapons of Semigallian and Livonian Order warriors are shown.
Other exhibitions present the everyday life of the region’s inhabitants in the 19th–20th centuries, the history of the Joniškis deanery and its sacred heritage, post-war partisans, the region’s businesses, crafts and border customs, including the only surviving interwar customs officer’s uniform. The museum also looks after the Joniškis synagogue complex, the Mato Slančiausko sodyba-muziejus (Mato Slančiauskas Homestead Museum), the Rudiškių muziejus (Rudiškės Museum) and a branch in Žagarė.
