Joniškio sinagogų kompleksas

About the museum

A complex of two 19th-century brick synagogues has survived in the centre of Joniškis. The White, summer synagogue was built in 1823 in romanticised classicist forms and is whitewashed. The Red, winter synagogue was built in 1842 (according to other sources, 1865) in the historicist style with neo-Gothic elements.

Both synagogues have been handed over to the Joniškio istorijos ir kultūros muziejus (Joniškis History and Culture Museum). In the White Synagogue an interactive exhibition, “Joniškio miesto istorijos raida” (“The Development of the History of Joniškis Town”), has been set up. It imitates the town's buildings from the 17th to the 20th century, with everyday finds – ceramics, footwear, examples of stoves and jewellery, coins – and an audiovisual projection.

The Red Synagogue presents the history and culture of the Jewish community of Joniškis: objects bearing witness to customs, ritual objects, the belongings of the Milvidskis family and an ornate Torah scroll mantle. Information boards tell of the interwar community, the Holocaust and the history of the synagogues.
