About the museum
At the beginning of the 20th century the best-known boatbuilder of the Pamarys region, Jonas Gižas (1867–1940), lived in Dreverna at Žvejų g. 13. He was famous for building the burvaltės of the Curonian Lagoon and other traditional boats. In 2010, when the homestead was restored, a modern interactive exhibition “J. Gižas. Laivadirbio skrynią atvėrus...” (When the Boatbuilder’s Chest Is Opened...) was set up in it. The homestead is a branch of the Gargždų krašto muziejus (Gargždai Regional Museum).
The permanent exhibition has four thematic parts: boatbuilding technology, timber preparation, the boatbuilder’s tools and a map of the Curonian Lagoon boatyards (statyklos). Separately, transport on the Curonian Lagoon and the family life of the Pamarys coast are presented.
