About the museum
The museum is located in Priekulė, in the former German gendarmerie – a complex of East Prussian brick buildings from the second half of the 19th to the early 20th century. From 1945 to 1953 the Soviet security headquarters and a detention cell were located here; in the inner courtyard the remains of partisans of the Butigeidis Unit of the Kęstutis District were desecrated.
Since 1997 a public organisation, the Laisvės kovų ir tremties istorijos muziejus, has operated in the building; in 2006 it became a branch of the Gargždų krašto muziejus (Gargždai Regional Museum). The permanent exhibition shows authentic objects from the period of deportation and resistance; in the basement a prison cell of the security headquarters has been reconstructed, and outside there are a deportation wagon and a reconstructed partisan bunker.
