About the museum
The Miežiškiai tree decorations museum began in 2010, when the town's librarian organised the exhibition “Remembering the Christmas Tree of Childhood” and asked the people of Miežiškiai to donate old tree decorations. About 200 exhibits were donated within two months. Over five years the collection grew to about 3,000 old Christmas attributes: garlands, masks, dominoes, Grandfather Frosts, Snow Maidens, artificial trees, snowflakes and decorations made of plastic, metal, cardboard, paper, foil, tubes and beads.
The museum is housed in a building belonging to the Miežiškiai community, which was reconstructed in 2013 and adapted for the museum under the territorial cooperation project “Small Community Museums”. The largest part of the exhibits consists of decorations made in Russia; the oldest are cotton-wool decorations made in 1930–1950, and others date to about 1980. Some decorations reflect the political and economic situation of the time.
