About the museum
The origins of the Panevėžys museum go back to the early 20th century. In 1924 a society for the study of the Panevėžys homeland was founded, whose main task was to establish a museum; on 18 January 1925 the first museum exhibition opened in the oldest building in the town, on Kranto Street, in the former archive of the Upytė county court. Between the wars the museum changed premises several times and collection departments were formed – history, nature, numismatics, archaeology and ethnography – and collecting continues to this day.
Today the permanent exhibition “Epochų dialogai” (“Dialogues of Epochs”) is housed in the main museum building on Vasario 16-osios Street. It presents the Panevėžys region from the Stone Age to the 16th century (more than 370 archaeological finds), the development of the town from its founding in 1503 to the First World War, the occupation period of 1940–1990 in imitation railway carriages, the ethnography of the region with cross-carving and folklore, notable people of Panevėžys, and the region's nature.
Other exhibitions also belong to the museum: an exhibition on resistance to the Soviet occupation and on Sąjūdis in an authentic place on Respublikos Street, the exhibition “Upytės bajorai” (“Nobles of Upytė”) in the Upytė county court archive, built in 1614 on Kranto Street, and the Panevėžys sports history exhibition in the Kalnapilio arena.
