About the museum
The Kaunas District Museum is housed in Raudondvaris Castle, a monument of 17th-century Renaissance architecture and the former residence of the Counts Tiškevičius of Raudondvaris. Today the history of the region is preserved and presented here, recalling the heyday of the manor and the distinguished personalities who lived here. The Kaunas District Museum was created by merging four museums of the Kaunas district and a craft centre.
The exhibition in the castle tower tells about the past of Raudondvaris and the Counts Tiškevičius who resided there – their genealogy, travels, hobbies and cultural heritage. The photo-reproduction exhibition “Benediktas Henrikas Tiškevičius and Izabelė Feraud” presents reproductions of photographs taken by the count in the early 20th century, depicting China, Ceylon, Japan, Jerusalem and Cairo.
An important part of the museum is the exhibition dedicated to the patriarch of Lithuanian music, Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934), and his native Raudondvaris. It holds the composer’s personal relics and presents his work and public activity; an informational educational terminal offers animation, games and recordings. The museum also displays the installation “Stiklo kambarys” (Glass Room) by the glass artists Audrius Vaišnys and Agnė Danelevičiūtė-Vaišnienė.
