About the museum
The Laikrodžių muziejus is a branch of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, located in a 19th-century suburban villa on Liepų gatvė in Klaipėda. Around 1820 the plot was built on by one of Klaipėda's richest patricians, Johanas Simpsonas; later the building belonged to a doctor, a banker and a factory director. In 1931 the Lithuanian state bought the house and set up the Land Bank here, and in 1945 the Klaipėda Pioneers' and Pupils' House was established in it.
The museum is the only one of its kind in Lithuania and in the Northern European region. The permanent exhibition presents the history of clock mechanisms and the development of clock forms from the Renaissance to the Modern era. Visitors can see rare clocks made by old masters in various European countries, learn what a clockmaker's workshop looked like in the Renaissance, and stroll through the unique Sundial Park.
In the education centre, interactive sessions are held for all visitor groups, and in the museum courtyard cultural events take place and artistic installations are displayed.
