About the museum

In the mid-13th century the Teutonic Order built Klaipėda Castle at the mouth of the Danė river. It was important to the Order's state and unfavourable to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, so its history was marked by attacks, fires and rebuilding. When the castle lost its military importance it began to decay, and in the second half of the 19th century its last bricks were built into buildings of the Old Town.

The Castle Museum has four exhibitions. Two are housed in the authentic casemates of the 16th–18th century, of Princes Frydrichas and Karlas. In the eastern curtain wall of the castle, a modern exhibition, “Muziejus 39/45”, tells of the tragedy of the Klaipėda region during the Second World War. In the northern curtain wall, restored on 1 August 2021, the archaeology exhibition “Kurtina” opened, where around 5 thousand finds and interactive displays recreate the history of old Klaipėda from the 13th to the 18th century.
