About the museum
The Prano Domšaičio galerija (Pranas Domšaitis Gallery) is a branch of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art in Klaipėda. It presents the work of the expressionist Pranas Domšaitis (1880–1965). The artist came from the village of Kruopynai, in what was then East Prussia; in 1907–1910 he studied at the Königsberg Academy of Arts, and in Germany he became known as a creator of expressionist landscapes and biblical compositions. In 1949 he left with his wife for the Republic of South Africa, where he lived in Cape Town.
More than six hundred of Domšaitis's works were donated to Lithuania by the Lietuvių fondas (Lithuanian Foundation) in the USA, which had acquired them from the artist's widow, Adelheid Armhold. The major part of his creative legacy is kept in the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, and since 2001 some of the works have been permanently exhibited in Klaipėda.
In the renovated permanent exhibition “Pranas Domšaitis. Visada kelyje” (Always on the Road) the work is presented chronologically and thematically, supplemented with multimedia elements. About two hundred works are on display: oil paintings, watercolours, pastels, drawings, embroidered compositions and two-sided paintings shown in special constructions.
