About the museum
The Lietuvos teatro, muzikos ir kino muziejus (Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum) was founded in 1926 in Kaunas, at Vytautas the Great University, on the initiative of the writers Balys Sruoga and Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius. In 1936 it was moved to the State Theatre; in 1957 it became a branch of the museum of the Lietuvos teatro draugija (Lithuanian Theatre Society, Actors' House); and from 1964, for almost thirty years, it was a branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum. In 1992 it became a separate museum.
The museum is located in the Old Town of Vilnius, in the Mažieji Radvilų rūmai (Small Radvila Palace), built at the beginning of the 17th century. The palace belonged to the Radvila family; in the late 18th century the city's only theatre of the time operated here, and later the building housed flats, shops and a pharmacy. Gothic cellars from the earlier buildings survive beneath the palace.
In the courtyard, at Vilniaus Street 41 D, the Muzeoteka complex opened in mid-March 2024, after 16 years of reconstruction. It contains seven open storage halls in which about 70% of the museum's collection is displayed: theatre art, large musical instruments, music collections, cinema cameras and large film equipment. The Muzeoteka can be visited with a guide. The museum also holds exhibitions, educational sessions, concerts and film screenings, and in summer events in the amphitheatre.
