About the museum
The Radvilų rūmų dailės muziejus is located in the Vilnius old town, in the palace of Jonušas Radvila. Jonušas Radvila, Grand Hetman of Lithuania and Vilnius voivode, began building the masonry residential palace in 1646; it replaced the wooden palace of Mikalojus Radvila the Black. Wars and fires badly devastated it; at the beginning of the 19th century the palace was taken over by the Vilnius Charitable Society, and some of the wings were demolished or rebuilt. Two three-storey pavilions and the wings connecting them have survived to our day.
Restoration work in the palace began in 1967, and the second pavilion was rebuilt in 1984. Since 1990 the Lietuvos dailės muziejaus padalinys – Radvilų rūmų muziejus (branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum) has been based here. In 1994 a gallery of foreign art was started, displaying European art from the 16th to the early 20th century.
In October 2020, after a small renovation, the museum opened a new long-term exhibition, “Protesto menas: sovietmečio nepaklusnieji” (The Art of Protest: Soviet-era Nonconformists), presenting the collection of the jazz musician and artist Vladimiras Tarasovas, donated to the museum. In March 2023 the southern wing, built in 1912 on Liejyklos gatvė, opened to visitors; it houses an exhibition of Western European painting from the 16th to the 19th centuries, “Gyvastingieji senojo pasaulio profiliai” (Living Profiles of the Old World). The palace complex awaits a major renovation, during which its historic structure will be restored. The museum also hosts short-term exhibitions, events, tours and educational activities.
