About the museum
The Pasvalio girnų muziejus is a branch of the Pasvalio krašto muziejus. It was set up in the homestead of Antanas Stapulionis (1930–2011), a museum worker and regional historian from Pasvalys, at the junction of Lėvens and Kalno streets. Antanas Stapulionis began collecting exhibits in 1979: he bought some, received some as gifts, and later land reclamation workers and stonemasons themselves reported interesting finds to him. He donated the collected exhibition of millstones and stones to the Pasvalio krašto muziejus, and it was first shown in the open air in 1998.
The collection comprises about 320 museum items: 214 millstones, 64 cup-marked stones, 7 “footed” stones, 2 boundary stones and an exhibition of mill gear wheels. Cup-marked stones are regarded as a legacy of pagan belief and a unique monument of the Baltic religion; during the years of intensive land reclamation they may have been buried in drainage ditches, so saving the collected stones was especially important. The exhibition is decorated with wood carvings.
