About the museum
The Pasvalio krašto muziejus is housed in the building that, from 1964 to 1990, was a typical Soviet cinema called “Svalia”. After the building was reconstructed, the museum opened here in September 1998, inviting visitors to discover the history of the Pasvalys region.
The ethnography exhibition displays 19th- and 20th-century farming implements, household objects, craftsmen's tools, musical instruments, genuine stone querns, flax-processing tools and weaving looms, and a traditional Aukštaitija farmhouse (gryčia). The geology exhibition presents the distinctive features of the region – gypsum-bearing rocks and karst processes, minerals, fossils, Lithuanian oil and Baltic amber. The history exhibition includes Stone and Iron Age finds from the Ąžuolpamūšė hillfort, the Norelių cemetery and other sites, weapons of the Semigallians (žiemgaliai), and a recreated old market square with a short film about Pasvalys. “Kultūros panorama” (“Cultural Panorama”) tells the stories of notable people from the region.
The exhibition “Pasaulio žmogus – Antanas Poška” (“A Man of the World – Antanas Poška”) commemorates the traveller, scientist and Esperantist: it includes five interactive books, the motorcycle “Iž Jupiter 2” on which the 1972 journey to the North Caucasus is re-enacted, and personal belongings. In a virtual reality bunker visitors can get to know the partisans, and a virtual spring lets them descend into the deepest cave in Lithuania. On the second floor there is a collection of witches, and a children's play room, “Meškiuko Rudnosiuko trobelė” (“Teddy Bear Rudnosiukas's Hut”). The museum also has outdoor exhibits: the partisan bunker in the Žadeikiai forest and the interactive sculpture of Antanėlis.
