About the museum
The Prienų krašto muziejus is located in Prienai, on F. Martišiaus gatvė, in a building that once belonged to the Pšemeneckis family. The main exhibition presents the ethnography and folk art of the region, the history of the freedom struggle and the past of the building itself.
The ethnography and folk art exhibition displays the most valuable folk art and ethnographic exhibits of the region; the largest and most authentic part of the collection consists of textiles. At the centre of the exhibition is a Suvalkija-style parlour (seklyčia) with an authentic interior, two pairs of mannequins dressed in the national costumes of Dzūkija and Sūduva, household furniture and craft tools.
In the history of the post-war struggles, the present-day Prienai district is distinctive because the routes of the Tauras, Dainava and Didžioji kova partisan districts converged here. The partisan exhibition is designed as a bunker, and the digitised photo archive can be accessed at a terminal. The exhibition on the history of the building tells of the Pšemeneckis house: at the initiative of C. Pšemeneckis, a 6000 V overhead line from Kaunas to Prienai was laid in early 1928, bringing electricity to the residents, and the house housed an electricity-network reception point.
