About the museum
The Vinco Mykolaičio-Putino gimtoji sodyba-muziejus was established in 1971 in the family home of the writer, poet, prose writer, playwright, literary historian and professor Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, in the village of Pilotiškės. The parlour recreates the writer’s childhood surroundings, and family furniture, photographs and books are on display. His parents were well-off peasants raising a large family, and Vincas was the eldest son.
The estate retains century-old apple trees with a pond and an authentic klėtis-svirnas (granary-barn). Before entering the estate, on the left, one can see the small hill Krūšakalnis-Aušrakalnis, mentioned in the famous novel “Altorių šešėly”; from the yard, the birches planted by the poet are also visible.
The building is now divided into two parts: the eastern, authentic part houses the memorial museum, while the western part is lived in – the writer’s relatives live there and take care of the beauty of the estate.
