About the museum
The Birštono sakralinis muziejus (Birštonas Sacral Museum) is a branch of the Birštono muziejus, opened in 2000 in the old parsonage near the Church of St Anthony of Padua (Šv. Antano Paduviečio). The building dates from 1880 and has changed its appearance many times in more than 140 years; when the museum was set up, however, the parsonage was renovated according to photographs from the early 20th century, and its verandas, windows, shutters and wooden architectural carvings were restored.
The museum is dedicated to the memory of the martyr Archbishop Blessed Teofilius Matulionis and Cardinal Vincentas Sladkevičius. The Bishop of Kaišiadorys, Teofilius Matulionis, lived in the Birštonas parsonage in 1956–1958 and led diocesan life from there; on 25 December 1957 he consecrated Vincentas Sladkevičius as bishop here, an important event in the history of the Catholic Church in Lithuania.
The permanent exhibition consists of two memorial exhibitions – of T. Matulionis and of Cardinal V. Sladkevičius – and an exhibition on the history and art of the Birštonas Catholic parish. It displays liturgical vessels and vestments, a small sculpture in the cross-making tradition, the sacred painting collection of patron Mykolas Žilinskas, and the oldest exhibit: a communion vessel (komuninė) from the Musninkai church, bearing the date 1619.
