About the museum
The museum's beginnings are linked to a women's handicraft exhibition held in 1965 at the Kupriai cultural centre. It showed that the village had a distinctive ethnographic heritage, so in 1966–1967 a Suvalkija-style farmstead was built in Kupriai, and on 25 June 1967 the “Suvalkietiška sodyba – muziejus” (“Suvalkija Farmstead – Museum”) opened.
During the reorganisation of the collective farms, when two farms merged, the architectural ensemble was moved from Kupriai to Skriaudžiai, next to the farmstead of the kanklės player Pranas Puskunigis. The museum was set up in Skriaudžiai in 1987, officially opened in 1989, and from 1991 has been called the Skriaudžių buities muziejus.
The exhibition is arranged in four buildings: the girls' granary, the granary barn (built in 1921), the smithy and the smoke house. The collection consists of household objects, bedding, textiles, smithing, kitchen and farm implements used by the Lithuanians of Suvalkija in the 18th–20th centuries, among them a kitchen cupboard from 1799 and a laundry-wringing machine from 1896. Nearby is also the calendar exhibition of the Skriaudžių buities muziejus.
