About the museum
The beginnings of the Švėkšna museum lie in a school museum founded by the school's teachers in 1969. In 1993 it became a branch of the Šilutė museum, and since 2005 it has been housed in new premises in the building of the Švėkšna “Saulės” gymnasium. Many of the exhibits belonged to the Švėkšna manor; the museum keeps a rich legacy of old printed books, and one of the most valuable publications is the 17th-century Lietuvos Statutas (Lithuanian Statute).
The exhibition now consists of four halls: ethnography, archaeology, manor history and town history. Tourist information services are also provided here for visitors to the town of Švėkšna.
