About the museum
Steponas Darius was born at the forested and marshy farmstead of Rubiškė, which after his death was renamed Darius village (Dariaus kaimas). On 15 October 1946 the farmstead was burned down, and the abandoned farm buildings fell into decay. In 1969 local historians and aviators preserved the site: they heaped a burial mound under the great oak and set up a stone with the inscription “Dariui ir Girėnui” (“To Darius and Girėnas”).
On the 50th anniversary of the flight of the “Lituanica” it was decided to rebuild the birthplaces of both airmen. In 1993 the house and granary were rebuilt, the grounds were tidied and a memorial exhibition was set up. Today the birthplace is a branch of the Lietuvos aviacijos muziejus (Lithuanian Aviation Museum). It hosts the exhibition “Steponas Darius. Sportininkas, karys ir lakūnas” (“Steponas Darius: Sportsman, Soldier and Airman”), a VR-goggles tour of aircraft interiors, and educational sessions.
