1863 m. sukilimo muziejus Paberžėje

A museum in the 18th-century wooden palace of the Paberžė manor, telling the story of the 1863 Uprising and the priest Antanas Mackevičius.

Opening hoursAdmission €2

About the museum

The Paberžė manor is believed to have been founded several centuries ago. The surviving wooden palace was built in 1793 by Baron Stanislovas Šilingas. The manor is famous because the leader of the 1863 Uprising, Antanas Mackevičius, was a priest in Paberžė: here he gathered the first detachment of about 300 insurgents, and the manor became the insurgents' headquarters, forge and workshops.

After the uprising was crushed, the owner of the manor was exiled, and in 1868 the manor passed to a Tsarist Russian official. Since 1993 the 1863 Uprising Museum has been housed in the palace; it is a branch of the Kėdainiai Regional Museum.

After the reconstruction begun in 2009, the building was restored authentically and adapted for visitors; the parquet and ceilings were recreated, and the exhibition was modernised. Its concept is based on the colours red and white: they stand for the two groups of insurgents – the “Reds” (democratically minded, mostly peasants) and the “Whites” (nobles). Grey marks the third side – the army of Tsarist Russia. At the end of the exhibition a restored collection of 65 kerosene lamps is shown.
