About the museum
The Juozo Tumo-Vaižganto ir knygnešių muziejus – the unique and only book smugglers' museum in Lithuania – belongs to the Panevėžys District Municipality Library and is located in the picturesque Krekenava area, in the granary of the Ustronė farmstead (a 19th-century architectural monument). Members of the Garšvių knygnešių bendrovė (Garšviai Book Smugglers' Society, 1885–1895) hid banned publications in this granary. The granary is also linked to the writer and educator Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas, who was parish priest in Vadaktėliai in 1902–1905. The museum keeps the writer's chair, handed over by the Naujamiestis church, and on the ground floor the book smugglers' portraits painted by folk artist Leonas Juozonis are displayed.
