About the museum
The museum was founded on 16 February 1998 thanks to the efforts of Albinas Jarmala, director of the Veisiejų vidurinė mokykla (Veisiejai Secondary School), and teacher Joana Vaikšnoraitė. It holds many exhibits and materials reflecting the school's history, the deportation of Veisiejai residents and other chapters of local history.
One exhibition is devoted to the ophthalmologist Liudvikas Lazaris Zamenhofas (L. L. Zamenhof), the creator of the international language Esperanto, who came to work in Veisiejai in 1885 and completed the creation of Esperanto here. In 1887, in Warsaw, he published the first textbook and dictionary of his language under the pen name Doctor Esperanto.
Another room commemorates famous people from Veisiejai, while an extensive exhibition presents the Veisiejai organist and composer Juozas Neimontas. The museum is a branch of the Lazdijų krašto muziejus.
