About the museum
The museum began to be built in 1984 at the Kapčiamiestis secondary school. In 2006 it became a branch of the Lazdijų krašto muziejus (Lazdijai Regional Museum) and was named after Emilija Pliaterytė. Four main exhibitions are currently on display, presenting the history of the town, traditional culture, the enlighteners of the region and prominent personalities.
The largest exhibition is dedicated to the heroine of the 1831 uprising, Captain Countess Emilija Pliaterytė, called the “Lithuanian Joan of Arc”. The ethnographic exhibition reflects the culture and everyday life of Kapčiamiestis in the early 20th century; it displays farm tools, household items and furniture, and a cottage window recalls the history of the family of a border policeman between Lithuania and Poland.
The town history exhibition presents the Jewish community that lived in Kapčiamiestis, the composer Česlovas Sasnauskas, the folk singer Veronika Povilionienė, Gražina Bigelytė-Bulavienė, the first female announcer of Lithuanian television, and other famous people. A separate exhibition is dedicated to the engineer, traveller and photographer Antanas Sadeckis, a pioneer of expeditions to places of deportation.
