About the museum
The museum building is one of the oldest objects in the town of Lazdijai – the former Seinų “Žiburio” gimnazija (Seinai “Žiburys” Gymnasium). In 1924, next to the gymnasium, the first museum in Lazdijai was set up by the gymnasium’s director, the priest and teacher Motiejus Gustaitis, who collected folklore, ethnography, household exhibits and archaeological finds. The act of privilege granted to the town of Lazdijai by King Zygmunt Vaza in 1597 was also kept here. After the gymnasium was nationalised in 1936, the museum declined.
In 1974 a Salomėja Nėris exhibition was set up in the gymnasium building; in 1995, in renovated premises, the Lazdijų istorijos, kultūros ir švietimo muziejus (Lazdijai History, Culture and Education Museum) was established, and in 2004 it was renamed the Lazdijų krašto muziejus (Lazdijai Regional Museum).
The exhibitions reflect the history of the Lazdijai region: archaeological finds, historical documents and copies of old maps, on which the name of the town of Lazdijai was first marked, are displayed. The exhibition begins with an interwar scenery of the town’s central street, and in the “Senojoje gimnazijos klasėje” (Old Gymnasium Classroom) one can sit on old benches and write with a goose quill. From 1928 to 1931 the poet Salomėja Nėris lived and worked in Lazdijai; a memorial exhibition dedicated to her is set up on the first floor.
