Motiejaus Gustaičio memorialinis namas

The Motiejus Gustaitis Memorial House in Lazdijai, where the Dzūkija educator, poet and linguist lived from 1924 to 1927, now with a modern exhibition.

Opening hoursAdmission €2

About the museum

From 1924 to 1927 this house was home to Motiejus Gustaitis, educator of the Dzūkija region: a clergyman, poet, pioneer of symbolism, writer, musicologist, linguist, translator, teacher and doctor of philosophy, and author of the first Lithuanian textbook “Stilistika” (Stylistics).

The restored building has been adapted for visitors, and the exhibitions are equipped with modern video, audio and computer technology. Photographs, books, letters and memories about Gustaitis's life and work are on display.

The exhibition is designed as if Gustaitis himself were walking through his home with the visitors, sharing his teachings and memories. The space is dominated by letters that become benches, passages and display cases, while the walls and windows are covered with text compositions that convey his poetry and thoughts.
