About the museum
The Vilniaus televizijos bokštas (Vilnius TV Tower) was begun in April 1974 on Karoliniškės hill and handed over for operation on 30 December 1980; it officially began to operate on 31 January 1981. The authors of the tower's design were the architect David Besiladzė and the engineers Vladimir Obydov and David Dortman. The structure, about 326 metres high, is the tallest in Lithuania.
The tower is associated with the bloody night of 13 January 1991, when 14 defenders of Lithuania's freedom were killed beside it. Their places of death are marked by granite obelisks, young oaks and a linden tree, and in 2005 an eight-metre bronze monument, “Aukojimas” (“Sacrifice”), was unveiled. On the ground floor an exhibition in memory of the victims of 13 January was set up in 1992 and renewed in 2016. In the park by the tower a historic antenna park was opened in 2011, where the satellite communications antenna “Nera”, donated by a Norwegian telecom company in 1991, is also displayed.
Visitors can go up to the observation platform, where there is a bistro-bar, and a restaurant below it; in warm weather an outdoor terrace is also opened.
