About the museum
The Vytauto Kasiulio dailės muziejus is a branch of the Lietuvos nacionalinis dailės muziejus (Lithuanian National Museum of Art). It opened its doors in June 2013 in the historic building of the Vilniaus mokslo bičiulių draugija (Vilnius Society of Friends of Science), beside the Green Bridge. The neoclassical palace was designed at the beginning of the 20th century by the engineers Henrykas Wojnickis and Janas Trojanas; construction began in 1910 and was completed in 1929. During the Soviet period the Lithuanian SSR Revolution Museum was housed here; later the building passed to the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, and it was reconstructed in 2012.
The core of the museum is the collection of the painter Vytautas Kasiulis (1918–1995), whose work, created in Paris, became known in Lithuania after the 2009 exhibition at the Vilniaus paveikslų galerija (Vilnius Picture Gallery). The collection was donated to Lithuania in 2010 by the painter's widow, Bronė Kasiulienė, and by his son Vytautas Victoras Kasiulis. The museum also presents the work of other notable émigré artists and little-studied Vilnius art of 1900–1941.
Since December 2022 a donors' space has been open, where selected paintings and archival materials from the collections donated by Bronė Kasiulienė and Vytautas Victoras Kasiulis are displayed.
