About the museum

The Luxembourg Science Center was created on the former site of Differdange’s steel industry (ArcelorMittal). The starting point was the heritage protection of two industrial monuments: the Groussgasmaschinn plant in August 2007 and the neighboring gas power station in November 2018.

Conversion of the “Léierbud” building into a science center began in May 2016, and the building officially opened in October 2017. The center is run by the non-profit association “Luxembourg Science Center – Groussgasmaschinn.” According to the association, it has since welcomed nearly 70,000 visitors a year.

In June 2018, the ESERO Luxembourg project was launched in the building. It is a training program for teachers, funded by the European Space Agency, the Luxembourg Space Agency and the Ministry of Education. In December 2021, a planetarium with a diameter of 20 meters was inaugurated.

The concept favors trying things out over looking at them: visitors explore phenomena of mechanics, electricity, optics, acoustics and astronomy at experiment stations, and also attend moderated science shows.
