About the museum

Until the 1960s, Fond-de-Gras was one of Luxembourg’s most important mining sites; a railway line connected the valley to Pétange and carried iron ore to the steelworks at home and abroad. Underground mining ended in 1955. In 1964, a landslide on the Fond-de-Gras–Pétange line brought rail traffic to a permanent halt. Shortly afterward, volunteers came together to run a tourist train with historic steam locomotives. The first steam train ran on August 4, 1973.

The name “Train 1900” refers to the first locomotive, No. 8, built by Hanomag in 1900; it once belonged to the Hadir steelworks in Differdange. The train departs from its own platform next to the CFL station in Pétange, climbs the “Prenzebierg” at a gradient of 23 per thousand, and stops at Fuussbësch, from which the “Giele Botter” nature reserve can be reached. The route passes the hills of Lamadelaine with the archaeological site of Titelberg before reaching Fond-de-Gras station.

The train is operated by the association AMTF Train 1900 (Association des Musées et Tourisme Ferroviaires) as part of the Minett Park, which is supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Service des Sites et Monuments Nationaux. The fleet includes steam and diesel locomotives, passenger coaches, freight wagons and equipment from the steel industry.

The step up into the historic carriages is very high; in the Fond-de-Gras valley there are cobblestones, and at some points you have to cross rails. According to the operator, this makes access more difficult for people with limited mobility.
