About the museum
Grou is home to an unusual command centre from the Cold War era. The bunker houses four command posts: a district command post and a provincial command post of the Bescherming Bevolking (civil defence), as well as a municipal civil defence centre (Leeuwarden) and a provincial civil defence centre (Friesland).
When plans were drawn up around 1965, it was decided to build a combined facility on this site. After a long preparation period, the command centre was officially put into service in 1967.
Today it is one of two visitor sites of the Museum Bescherming Bevolking, which collects and displays the legacy of the organisation founded in 1952. Civil defence was meant to protect the population from the immediate effects of acts of war and later also helped during peacetime disasters, for example by fighting fires and rescuing people.
